Adopt-a-Beach with the Doves Studio

On May 4th, the Doves Studio completed the first of three beach cleanups in Santa Monica. The best word to describe the cleanup: eye-opening. Small pieces of plastic, cigarette buds, and unusual finds is what you might come across while taking a stroll on the beach. The Doves Studio has two more cleanups to go, as part of the Adopt-a-Beach program with Heal the Bay. Hope to see you at the next cleanup!

Join us on June 14th from 5-6pm for our second beach cleanup! Meet us at the Doves Studio at 4:45pm and we can walk down to the beach together or meet us at Lifeguard Tower #18 (south side of the pier) at 5pm. Parking is $10 by the pier or complimentary by the Doves Studio. Please dress comfortably and wear sunscreen.

The Doves Studio Flocks to Greener Pastures

Santa Monica, California
The Doves Studio Master Designer, Nicole Leal, has voluntarily taken the lead to make 2009 the year the Doves Studio becomes the first recognized green salon in the city of SantaMonica. Leal has adopted her new role as “Green Ambassador” by working in conjunction with a couple of key local organizations that support and give back to the community through their continual and significant positive contributions to the environment and local commerce.

Nicole’s 2-year active involvement with Heal the Bay, an organization aimed to keep the local beaches of Santa Monica Bay clean and safe for humans and animals alike, has compelled her to rally the Doves Studio team to Adopt-a-Beach. Via this program, the salon has chosen to clean Santa Monica beach, stepsaway from their location, from May to July this year. It was also because of Heal the Bay that Leal was introduced to Sustainable Works, another local organization created to promote green and sustainable business practices.

By adopting their Business Greening Program, the Doves Studio has the opportunity to
become the first distinguished green salon in Santa Monica. Chris Dove shares, “I’m very proud of Nicole and the work she is doing to heighten the awareness of our individual involvement making a better planet for us to live and work. Green is good, except when a client comes in with it in her hair!” Leal has also volunteered the salon to be a host site for future sustainable workshops conducted by leading Sustainable Works experts.

The Doves have already had a head start in the green arena by reducing energy costs when washing their towels in cold water and hanging them to dry, recycling wherever they can, using recycled products and reducing as much waste as possible. In addition, the Doves donate their collected hair clippings to Matter of Trust, Inc., an ecological public charity in San Francisco that creates hair mesh mats to clean up oil spills.

Leal hopes to implement more opportunities to give back through the salon by holding annual
events, such as one on Earth Day in April, where a portion of the proceeds made on that day is given back to Heal the Bay. Sonya Dove remarks, “Nicole really made me realize that if each person does a little to help the environment, we can collectively make a difference together.”
