Green Meets Girl gives some color advice...

Question from Bruce K. Smith : I used equal parts Color Touch 7/0 + 7/03 with 1.9% as a lowlight formula on prelightend level 9/10 hair and it pulled really cool. How do I fix this and make it a warm tone?

Answer from Nicole Leal: The first thing I would have done would have been a sample strand. This would have guaranteed my result. Another formula that would have been a better choice would be 7/03 + 7/3 with 1.9%. Sometimes I find the /03 to be on the cooler side, so when I'm attempting a lowlight I usually add more gold to be on the safe side. At this point, the best choice to correct the situation would be to do a slight color removal with blondor and warm distillled water.

Green meets Girl gives some COLOR ADVICE...

HAIRSTYLIST (Maria):
I use koleston perfect! And my question is how can u make like a strawberry blonde?.... Like what r the bases of it? More copper? More gold?.....
P.S. I took a wella class with nicole and I loved it! Wella color line makes it so much easier for me!

Green meets Girl:
Well, to answer your question a true strawberry blonde can sometimes be a little tricky to create. Primarily because we all see tones differently. The main thing that I see that can go very wrong with a strawberry blonde is that if its too light in depth it can end up looking just gold and if its too dark in depth it can almost look to red. One of my favorite combinations is a 9/3 and 8/34 equal parts. A true strawberry blonde lies right in between a level 8 and 9. Now keep in mind mind that this formula is on virgin hair. Toning is a whole other ball game...

Consultation 101: Time for a Change
Picture Perfect Nicole Leal of The Doves Salon in Santa Monica, CA :says that once your client has agreed to an updated style or color change, show her pictures to demonstrate exactly what you mean. If you’re dealing with a client who’s nervous to begin with, the last thing you want to do is make her feel even more uncomfortable. “Pictures speak louder than words and reduce the risk of misinterpretation,” Leal says. “They help the client better understand layers, volume and movement and what their hair type can achieve.” And after giving your client a completely new look, don’t let her walk out the door without knowing how to style it. Provide an in-depth blow dry lesson and give her some tips and examples on several different ways she can style her hair. It creates more excitement about her look and promotes more product options for home use.

Color Formula Favorites for Fall
Nicole Leal and Rachael Blondina, The Doves Salon, Santa Monica, CA. Leal’s blonde clients want subtle contrast, so she mixes up this go-to formula - Wella Color Touch: Equal parts 8/03 light beige blonde + 7/3 medium gold blonde + 1.9% developer. “This formula adds just the right amount of warmth and contrast while still maintaining a sun-kissed look.”
Blondina softens up her clients’ looks for fall with rich, warm auburn tones. She likes using demi-permanent color to maintain the health of the hair while still adding a great amount of shine. Her favorite fall formula? She begins with Wella Color Touch: 6/77 milk chocolate + 1.9% developer as a base, depending on how much warmth is already in the hair. “On its own,” says Blondina, “it’s a very rich color with double amounts of warmth.” To add more of a red undertone, she continues with Wella Color Touch: ½-oz. 6/77 milk chocolate + ½-oz. 6/47 red fire + 1.9% developer. “If the client’s hair is darker than a Level 6, lift the base with Wella Koleston Perfect,” advises Blondina. A formula like Koleston Perfect: 6/07 dark blonde/natural brown + 20-volume developer will lift the base color to a rich warm shade.

BFF: Teens and your salon
STYLIN'Her biggest beauty priority: hair. The cusp years between high school and college are typically when a teen girl makes the leap from virgin hair, often all one length and often longish, to something more sophisticated. NICOLE LEAL, color expert and member of WELLA's Power Pack Team, explains that the first step for a fresh back-to-school may be damage control. She should know--many of her clients are in the 15-19 age range, with the California State University at Northridge (CSUN) campus nearby. "Even if a teen has never colored her hair," she says, "the stylist's first priority may be restoring and protecting the hair's quality and integrity. The ends of the hair may often be dried out and porous, especially after the summer. Chlorine is a big factor, and so are alcohol-based styling products, particularly when the hair has been exposed to a lot of sun."
Trimming off a couple of inches is usually the place to start, followed by a deep-clarifying shampoo "to pull out the mineral deposits which can build up in hair," explains Leal. "And minimally, I also recommend a clear shine deposit, to glaze and seal hair and make it glossy." Leal also recommends a polishing serum which may be smoothed over dry hair (2 - 3 drops) or worked into damp hair.

The Doves Studio Flocks to Greener Pastures

Santa Monica, California
The Doves Studio Master Designer, Nicole Leal, has voluntarily taken the lead to make 2009 the year the Doves Studio becomes the first recognized green salon in the city of SantaMonica. Leal has adopted her new role as “Green Ambassador” by working in conjunction with a couple of key local organizations that support and give back to the community through their continual and significant positive contributions to the environment and local commerce.

Nicole’s 2-year active involvement with Heal the Bay, an organization aimed to keep the local beaches of Santa Monica Bay clean and safe for humans and animals alike, has compelled her to rally the Doves Studio team to Adopt-a-Beach. Via this program, the salon has chosen to clean Santa Monica beach, stepsaway from their location, from May to July this year. It was also because of Heal the Bay that Leal was introduced to Sustainable Works, another local organization created to promote green and sustainable business practices.

By adopting their Business Greening Program, the Doves Studio has the opportunity to
become the first distinguished green salon in Santa Monica. Chris Dove shares, “I’m very proud of Nicole and the work she is doing to heighten the awareness of our individual involvement making a better planet for us to live and work. Green is good, except when a client comes in with it in her hair!” Leal has also volunteered the salon to be a host site for future sustainable workshops conducted by leading Sustainable Works experts.

The Doves have already had a head start in the green arena by reducing energy costs when washing their towels in cold water and hanging them to dry, recycling wherever they can, using recycled products and reducing as much waste as possible. In addition, the Doves donate their collected hair clippings to Matter of Trust, Inc., an ecological public charity in San Francisco that creates hair mesh mats to clean up oil spills.

Leal hopes to implement more opportunities to give back through the salon by holding annual
events, such as one on Earth Day in April, where a portion of the proceeds made on that day is given back to Heal the Bay. Sonya Dove remarks, “Nicole really made me realize that if each person does a little to help the environment, we can collectively make a difference together.”

About The Doves Studio:
